Event Details

One of the eighty grand affairs at the TD Halifax Jazz Festival, July 8-16, 2011.

Jill Barber (VAN)
jazz / folk

Jill Barber became Nova Scotia’s songbird-darling while sowing her career here prior to moving to Vancouver. The Pacific breeze seems to have enlightened her music with an elevated savoir-faire in her composition and instrumentation. Her latest album Mischievous Moon contin- ues her transition from a metro-folk artist to a elegant chanteuse. Like her vintage-forward fashion sense, Barber’s songwriting and vocal execution has the power to elicit time travel through past, present and future. It is as if her songs were once virtual melodies suspended in time, that waited for the right spirit and voice to own them. In turn, her newest music is like a soundtrack waiting for a cinematic feature to be writ- ten. Her music is inspired and it inspires. Jill Barber has co-written songs with Ron Sexsmith and has fea- tured Blue Rodeo, Sarah McLachlan and Feist on her recordings. Jill Barber and her band — including JUNO award-winning producer Les Cooper — draw the audi- ence into a fantastical realm. You will leave fulfilled, enlivened and grateful for life’s simple pleasures.

Personnel: Jill Barber (guitar, vocals), Les Cooper (guitar), Drew Jurecka (violin, winds), Adam Warner (drums, percussion) and Steve Zsirai (bass)

Pugs & Crows (VAN)
modern jazz/ Eastern European folk

Hailing from Vancouver, The Pugs and Crows epitomize the new promise found in young Canadian jazz. There is a new generation of play- ers who sound immediately more exploratory than the old guard. Many of them, including the members of Pugs and Crows, have a background in classical training, yet seem to be equally influenced by the dark, cinematic sounds of Canada’s Constellation Records roster, and Astor Piazzolla’s mysterious tangos. The Pugs and Crows received the prestigious Galaxie Rising Star award in 2010, a well-deserved honour that should bring their surprisingly mature compositions to new ears. With a new album in the can, they are set to make their mark. This show promises to be both meditative and scintillating.

Personnel: Meredith Bates (violin), Catherine Toren (piano), Cole Schmidt (guitar), Clayton Murray (gui- tar), Russell Sholberg (bass) and Ben Brown (drums)
